When Fast Fashion Replaced Five Centuries of Handcraft
In 2018, walking through Jaipur’s historic craft alleys, we saw a heartbreaking reality. Master Karigars whose ancestors once embroidered royal drapes for Maharanis were struggling to survive.
As consumer culture shifted toward fast-paced, disposable clothing, powerlooms flooded the market with cheap synthetic replicas. Middlemen exploited artisans with fraction-wages, driving 5th-generation craftsmen away from their looms to seek daily manual labor.
